The development of Las Vegas hotels continues at some pace with new hotel projects having been completed and new ones under construction, and more in the planning stages.

The history of Las Vegas is as rich as the city itself today. Nevada was the first US state to legalise casino based gambling, ands the last state in Western USA to outlaw in 1910’s. The anti gambling law lasted 3 weeks as the market moved underground. For many years it remained illegal but generally ignored by the authorities. In 1931 gambling was legalised in Nevada in order to raise taxes for schools (as significant % of gambling tax revenues are still diverted in to education today).

In 1941 the El Rancho Vegas Hotel-Casino was built opposite the Sahara Hotel and this effectively started the Las Vegas Strip. This was quickly followed by other hotels and the building of the road between Las Vegas & Los Angeles – about a 4 hour straight road drive through the dessert. The El Ranch no longer exists but a few of the original hotel names such as the Flamingo Hotel are still there. Built by gangster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel in 1946, he was murdered 6 months after the Flamingo opened. The hotel name still exists but was rebuilt in the mid nineties.

In the 1950’s the famous hotels of the Desert Inn and the Sands Hotel opened. In 1955 the first nine story hotel opened – The Riviera Hotel, Stardust Hotels and the Fremont Hotel-casino in Down Town Las Vegas. Fremont Street is now a draw for tourists looking doe some 1970’s retro Vegas casino’s. In 1990 the Las Vegas convention centre was built - currently one of the largest convention centres in the World at 1.6 million square feet.

More recently the super hotels have taken pride of place on and around the Vegas Strip: The Bellagio Hotel (remember the film Oceans 11 ?) , Luxor Hotel, Encore Hotel, and sister hotel the Wynn, Hard Rock Hotel, Planet Hollywood Hotel, Venetian, Paris Hotel, MGM Grand Hotel, The Aria Hotel, ...
